Pubs in Chester
Chester’s historic heart is rammed with quirky pubs bursting with old world charm and some fabulous ales which offer a great retreat from the hustle and bustle of Chester – but remember that pubs close around 11:30pm, so don’t expect to stay out late. The Olde Custom House on Watergate Street is within the walls of a 17th-century building with many original features still intact. Stepping into The Old Boot Inn – reputedly the oldest pub in the city – is like stepping back in time, and this charismatic pub features a stone staircase leading up to a large hall complete with a fireplace, large bar, and low ceilings with exposed beams.
The Pied Bull – an old oak-beamed 18th-century coaching inn on Northgate Street – has a CAMRA award winning selection of fine craft brewed ales brewed on site, and wines, beers and spirits from all over the world and the atmosphere in this history laden bar is friendly. Ye Olde King’s Head on Lower Bridge Street built in 1622, is reputedly haunted and offers ghost hunts – but don’t let that scare you away from enjoying a nice pint in the pub’s quaint, traditionally English surroundings.

If you’re in the mood for sipping on a classic cocktail, the popular Bar Lounge on Watergate Street has a sultry, Moroccan-inspired interior where you can ease yourself into a cosy sofa and sip away to your heart’s delight with one of the bar’s many cocktails. The Church is a new bar on Newgate Street inside a meticulously restored church restored which features a showcase of local live music talent playing in the Live Music room every Friday & Saturday night from 10.30pm. If you fancy a jig, live Irish music and atmosphere can be sampled at the Red Lion on Northgate Street on Sunday nights along with a pint of Guinness.
Telford ’s Warehouse at Tower Wharf on the canal basin is an independently run bar restaurant and also a renowned music and arts venue featuring a plethora of live acts – it’s often possible to see some famous names playing here too. For a spot of live jazz, blues, rock – or even comedy – check out Alexander’s Jazz Theatre on Rufus Court just off on Northgate Street.
For some hot Latin fever get your fill of swing with the DJs at Fiesta Havana on Watergate Street where the vibe is cool and lively, and guaranteed to infect you with fun and entice you onto the dance floor. RB’s (aka Rosie’s) is a big venue on Northgate Street with three floors where Djs spin different tunes depending on the night of the week, including 80s, dance, hip-hop and R&B. The venue is something of a Chester institution and with cheap entry and reasonably priced drinks it’s popular with the student crowd.
